Kydd by Julian Stockwin, --A rarity among current nautical books, a sea tale told from the viewpoint of an enlisted man, an impressed one at that. Not unlike Patrick O'Brian's _Master and Commander_ the reader learns much about the sea and particularly about serving "before the mast." The author has promised a series and this book and leads the reader from one adventure to the next. Placed in 1793, Europe is ablaze with war and the Royal Navy must rebuild itself using many young men like Kydd. How they fare and merge with the experienced seamen, how they can accept their unwanted circumstances, and how they survive is the stuff of the book. This book is a good read but also makes one realize how wonderful it was that POB could produce his latter books at the rate of one a year. I look forward to watching our new author's skills improve over the next books of the series. --P, Book Number B01004. List price $24.00, your price $20.40
