Collected Tales Of Conrad [B00283] Collected Tales Of Conrad by Joseph Conrad, --Many call Conrad the greatest of nautical writers. Not all of the stories in these books relate to the sea, nor do many of the stories relate to commonplace life that most would recognize but Conrad's life was the sea. Some stories, "The Duel," (On which the movie The Duelists was based) seem to find a heart-wrenching happy ending from improbable events while others, "The Idiots," end unhappily with an event flowing surprisingly but inevitably from the tale. His sea stories range from sail to early steam but all brilliantly evoke the sea and a seaman's respect for it. Don't expect to find the "technicolor" world of POB; Conrad's palette has black, grays, and dark browns. Much of his work may not be readily accessible to average readers nor will many of his nautical allusion readily obvious. "Amy Foster" will leave you groping for heroes and villians-or fools. "Youth" reflects the views of old men about their differences from the man they once were. My dad and his cronies often started a story with, "Was you in Cuba during the revolution." This story might have started, "Was you ever having fun in a typhoon?". P, List Price $18.00, Your price $15.30, Book Number B00283.

Oxford Reader's Companion to Conrad [B00861] Oxford Reader's Companion to Conrad by Owen Knowles and Gene Moore, --The essential Conrad reference. Conrad, one of the most compelling an complex figures in English literature and the man most frequently mentioned as the greatest nautical writer, lived a life as astonishing as any of his novels. Born Polish, spent his childhood in exile, then a 20-year career as a merchant seaman. In middle life he began to write--in English. Conrad complexity calls for just such assistance as this reference provides.. H, List Price $0.00, Your price $0.00, Book Number B00861.
