Commentary

My father, a true sailmaker, when teaching knots would always impress on
me that the important thing to know was the purpose of knots.  Which loop
would not close under strain?  Which could be untied when wet and frozen?
Which was best for  "bending" a light line to a heavy one?

The site  http://www.animatedknots.com/ does a good job of sorting all this
out for you.  Highly recommended.
