A companion book for the Aubrey-Maturin series.
In time for the tenth anniversary of POB's death.
Combines the art of Geoff Hunt, the history of Brian Lavery, and technical details for fans at sharply reduced price.
Not since the publication in the 1990s of the three calendars offering Geoff Hunt's art in a large format have I been so delighted by a publication.  This is an ideal companion for the Aubrey-Maturin books.  By focusing  on the images of the HMS Surprise, this book selects a dominant connecting theme  among the Aubrey-Maturin series.  The book starts the tale with the history of the actual ship, HMS l'Unite, which became the HMS Surprise in the Royal Navy.  She went on to capture "The Black Ship" after it's mutiny at Spithead and escape to the Caribbean.  This lavishly illustrated book contains  large size reproductions of the prints which provided the covers of the Aubrey-Maturin books, and the bright, attractive images are accompanied by historic and technical details about the ships themselves.

The book includes a full set of drawings by Karl Heinz Marquardt which depict the l'Unite and the HMS Surprise as she appeared in the books of O'Brian.

Geoff Hunt, who provided all the Patrick O'Brian book covers and the covers of several other authors, outlines his research into the ship and provides sketches of his covers in various forms of completion.  Everyone of the Aubrey-Maturin's 21 covers has a detailed description.

The book benefits greatly from having access to the files of Nicolai Tolstoy, O'Brian's stepson and inheritor of his library and manuscript material.  Tolstoy also wrote the foreword.  Many delightful details emerge as the book unfolds.  The difference between "wearing" and "tacking."  How various occupations make up the ship's crew.

And, of course, information about the movie resulting from the series, Master and Commander, Far Side of the World.

The book provides an archive of facts and details. Appendix 1 gives separate sections on:

Chronology
Crew List
Mast, Yards, and Stores
Maintenance History
