Launching Day, USS America
#
by Geoff Hunt, Launching Day, USS America, The First United States Battleship Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 5 November 1782 In November, 1776, the Continental Congress ordered the construction oof three 74 gun ships. This class of warship was the state-of-the-art naval weapon of the late eighteenth century, and one of the most complex engineering constructions of its day - a remarkably ambitious project for the fledging nation. The three would be the biggest ships so far built in North America. Moreover, they were to be larger than their contemporaries in eithe rthe British or French navies, and "no pains will be spared to make ... so good a ship as can be built in America." Due to the circumstances of the war, only one of these impressive units, the America, was ever completed. She was constructed at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, overseen and launched by her captain-designate, John Paul Jones. The great new ship fell victim to politics and even before completion was given to America's ally France in a grand gesture. She was thus launched under the flags of both the United States and France. The launching itself, into the narrow Piscataqua River, was difficult - the citizens of Portsmouth must have wondered if the 182 foot ship would finish up in their parlors - but was accomplished with the same skill and flair that had marked the rest of this outstanding achievement of Continental shipbuilding. Gen. Washington's Wolfpack
#
by Geoff Hunt, Continental Army schooners raiding British supply ships, 1776. Encamped outside Boston in 1775, General Washington's forces outnumbered the British trapped within the city. But the British commanded the sea, and Washington could see their supply ships going to and fro as they pleased. There was no Continental Navy to stop them. Washington was very anxious to disrupt this trade and if possible capture munitions, particularly gunpowder, of which his army was desperately in need. The resourceful general improvised his own navy, leasing eight small schooners and manning them with soldiers from sea-minded units of his army, such as the 21st Massachusetts, who hailed from Marblehead. These little vessels - only about sixty feet long, armed with a handful of four-pounder cannon - when handled with determination, played havoc with British supplies and even captured the longed-for powder ship. During March 1776 they were operating together in groups of up to five. Their career lasted until the fall of 1777, when the last of them passed into history. Their work was done. The Continental Navy was going to sea - some of its officers having first served their country in the schooners of WashingtonOs army.

H.M.S. Augusta, Philadelphia 1777
#
by Geoff Hunt, British 64-gun ship under fire from Fort Mifflin and Pennsylvania State Navy gunboats. In October 1777 the British Royal Navy tried to force its way up the Delaware River to make contact with their army, then occupying Philadelphia. The State of Pennsylvania had organized a strong defense using underwater obstacles, shore forts, and a purpose-built gunboat navy. But on 23rd October it was misfortune that doomed the 64-gun battleship Augusta, which first ran aground off Fort Mifflin and then caught fire. During the morning this ship and the Merlin, similarly stranded, came under heavy attack from the shore batteries and from Commodore Hazlewood's galleys and guardboats. Despite frantic efforts to save her, the fire gained and the crew were forced to abandon ship, being rescued by ships including the 44-gun Roebuck (at left), which herself was badly damaged. At noon Augusta's magazine exploded, destroying this valuable vessel - the largest British warship lost in action in the whole course of the Revolutionary War. Though the Royal Navy subsequently reached Philadelphia, the protracted river fighting had so delayed British operations that the campaign of 1777 ground to a halt in winter. The delay would ultimately prove fatal to their cause, since the French entered the war before winter ended.

Fireships on the Hudson River.
#
by Geoff Hunt, Night Attack on H.M. Ships Phoenix and Rose, August, 1776: On July 12, 1776 the British sent a small squadron of warships into the Hudson River in order to attack the flanks of General Washington's forces. The ships were the Phoenix, 44 guns, the Rose, 20 guns, the schooner Tryal, and two small tenders, the Charlotte and the Shuldham. They were to operate as far up the river as Peekskill. They found themselves in an uneasy situation, with Washington's army in unknown force on both shores. After a month of inconclusive skirmishes, the ships were anchored off "Colonel Phillip's Farm" on the night of 16 August. Just before midnight two vessels were sighted nearby, closing in. Their crews were seen setting fires and abandoning ship - the American rebels were using fireships, the most feared form of attack against combustible wooden warships. While the British hurriedly tried to cut their cables and set sail, the first fireship hit the Charlotte and both vessels burned out. The second fireship narrowly missed the Rose, then crashed into the bow of the flagship Phoenix.. It took twenty desperate minutes before the Phoenix's crew managed to fend off the blazing hulk. Literally overnight, the situation had become far more dangerous than the British imagined. The next day the squadron retreated downriver, taking some damage while passing the American batteries, and anchored off Staten Island - where they found that Vice-Admiral Lord Howe had arrived with the main fleet and army. by Geoff Hunt, To deter continuing attacks by the notorious Barbary Pirates of Tripoli, The US sent Lieutenant Decatur in command of a 10 vessel squadron. Pictured are the distinguished U.S.S. Ontario, a ship-sloop fitted with 20 32 lb. carronnades, a very powerful short range weapon. Partly obscured by the lateen rigged Xebec is the Guerriere a 44 gun frigate. Continuing to the right is the 36 gun Frigate U.S.S. Constellation and the Macedonian, a 38 gun frigate, captured from the English by Decatur in 1812 and lastly the brig U.S.S. Epervier, also taken from the English. The squadron went on to capture the Algerian Pirate's Flagship, bombard Tripoli and then negotiate the cessation of attacks on American shipping in the Mediterranean.

Boreas in the West Indies March 1787

by Geoff Hunt, The 28-gun frigate Boreas, an early command in the West indies, came close to ruining Nelson's career. Keeping to the letter of the Navigation Act, he found the Islanders of Nevis suing him for 40,000 Pounds, something of a problem for a man whose full pay was 260 Pounds a year! However, he was later vindicated and the same island also provided him with a wife, Fanny. by Geoff Hunt, The most significant battle in British naval history took place at walking pace, in light winds, with the great ships of the British opposing the combined Franco-Spanish fleets, all rolling slowly in the Atlantic Swell. The British line led by Nelson in Victory took six hours to get within range. As they, at last, approached the enemy line Temeraire began to overtake Victory. Nelson was not amused. From left to right the vessels are: Ariel, 18 gun sloop (The Surgeon's Mate); Polychrest, experimental 24-gun sloop (Post Captain); foreground Leopard, 50-gun fourth-rate (Desolation Island); Boadicea, 38-gun frigate (The Mauritius Command); Ringle, Baltimore-built armed schooner (The Commodore & c). Geoff Hunt is best known for painting the covers of Patrick O'Brian novels, where his meticulous attention to historical detail serves him well. Dispatches for Admiral Thornton. [POB based]
#
by Geoff Hunt, As related in Patrick O'Brian's novel, Ionian Misssion, the Royal Navy devoted a colossal effort during the Napoleonic wars to the close blockade of the French coast, maintaining fleets of ships-of-the-line in a permanent basis in the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean. It was the first time in history that blockade on such a scale ahd been attempted. While the ships-of-the-line endlessly patrolled their stations, smaller vessels ran to and fro with supplies and information. In this Mediterranean scene we see the frigate HMS Surprise arriving with dipatches for Admiral Thornton who is flying his flag in the massive 110-gun HMS Ocean. Both ships are hove-to, allowing boats to shuttle between them. The Mediterranean is sometimes far from being a peaceful sea, particularly in winter; and rain squalls are sweeping over the fleet.--Mystic Seaport, 2001 700 S/N and 75 remarque, Image 22x13.8, Trim 26.3.
