Across the Western Ocean [B01083] Across the Western Ocean by John Roberts & Tony Barrand, Songs of the North Atlantic Sailing Packets. Day and Night, through fair weather and foul, American sailing packets ploughed the North Atlantic. Between 1818 and 1870, they ferried the elite of society to and from Europe, sped vital manufactured goods, and transported millions of emigrants to the New World. Their crews, drawn from both sides fo teh Atlantic, were hard men driven as mercilessly as the ships, yet their work-tie shanties and leisure-time forebitters reflect both a cheerful resilience and an unexpected depth of emotion. These songs are theirs , shaped and sung on their way across the Western Ocean. Particularly interesting are narrations of contemporary texts about the ships.--Swallowtail, , , . Musical Evenings in the Captain's Cabin [B01254] Musical Evenings in the Captain's Cabin by Richard Kapp, POB's notes to the first CD make clear that a musical background was not uncommon for men of Aubrey's class and time. Richard Kapp writes, "After all, this was their culture, these were their instruments, this was what they listened to and what they encountered in the various civilized societies they landed in, both in the British Isle, in Europe and even in the western hemisphere, wherever Europeans had preceded them." Kapp continues, "The new cd differs from [our previous Musical Evenings CDs] in that it focuses exclusively on music for violin and cello _ the two instruments that A&M played. In the course of our earlier cds we have included music they might have heard in Port Mahon (Locatelli) or played with others aboard the ship (Mozart Oboe Quartet) along with other works that could well have been within their ken. Here we have drilled down to the repertoire for their two instruments by composers whose work might well have been known to them through the extensive London music publishing world."After all, this was their culture, these were their instruments, this was what they listened to and what they encountered in the various civilized societies they landed in, both in the British Isle, in Europe and even in the western hemisphere, wherever Europeans had preceded them. Kapp continues, "The new cd differs from [our previous Musical Evenings CDs] in that it focuses exclusively on music for violin and cello _ the two instruments that A&M played. Roast Beef of Old England [B00831] Roast Beef of Old England by Jerry Bryant, Sailor songs of the 1800s with a selection of chanteys, forebitters, and traditional English songs. Of particular interest to POB's fans are Roast Beef of Old England, and Heart of Oak. The notes provide information on when and where the songs appeared in the Aubrey-Maturin Saga. I prize especially the lenght of the songs. While I can not state that each song included all known stanzas, the length exceeds most recordings. And the usual chance to learn the pronunciation of sailor terms. The CD includes 24 songs: Spanish Ladies, A Jolly Sailor's True Description of A Men-of-war (a nice first person narration in song of a new-comers experience arriving on his ship--quite new to me.), Adieu, Sweet Lovely Nancy, Saint Patrick's day, Warlike Seamen, The First of June, Drops of Brandy, Roast Beef of Old England, Heart of Oak, Nancy Dawson, Ben Backstay, Sailor's Hornpipe/Rickett's Hornpipe, Bay of Biscay-o, the Battle of the Nile, Nelson's Victory/Hull's Victory, the Banks of the Nile/Sailor's Cravat, A New Sea Song (Sweethearts and Wives), Pleasant and Delightful, Captain Barton's Distress on the Lichfield, Chevy Chase, The Shannon and the Chesapeake, Distressed Men-of-war (the threat of peace), Sailor's Jacket, Don't Forget Your Old Shipmate.--ESS A. Songs of the Sailor [B00671] Songs of the Sailor by Mystic Seaport Chanteymen, These chanties have the raw, ragged nature and male orientation that you would expect of chanties and sea songs. The CD contains 25, some new to me like Dead Horse and Roll the Old Chariot and some old like Ranzo (who could not furl a royal) and Boney (though much longer than I've heard before). And "Strike the Bell, Second Mate, and let us go below" which has that melody that locks in your mind for day-long repetition. However much we would like to gloss over it, the assurance of "bed and meals" after leave on shore led to a certain amount of "partying" among sailors which POB records. Much in the chanties records what happens ashore as well as expressing a sailor's love of his ship. Accompanies the song book of the same name. Songs include "Cape Cod Girls," "Haul on the Bowline," " Reuben Ranzo," "Santianno," "Roll the Woodpile Down," " John Cherokee," " Liverpool Judies," " Haul Away Joe," "Rolling Down to Old Maui," "A Long Time Ago," and the "Dead Horse" halyard chantey.--Mystic Seaport, , , . Traditional Songs Of England [B00290] Traditional Songs Of England by , Jo Freya sings the traditional songs and her clear, pure soprano has textures that livens the uppity songs and adds poignancy to the laments. The music goes down as slick as a pizza slice but the obsessive part are the words: each ballad a little puzzle that must be teased from the text and liner notes. Many, as you would expect, tell stories familiar from our readings of POB, Forester, et al. The English tradition abounds in beautiful melodies and on this album some of the most delightful are brought together with performances by one of England's finest female exponents.
