100 Gun Ship Victory; The by John McKay,
--Forever associated with Nelson's last battle at Trafalgar, Victory is one of the most famous ships of all time. An example of the ultimate sailing warship--the three-decker First Rate--Victory was the most popular and successful 100-gun ship of the period, the flagship of half a dozen famous admirals. First published in 1987 in the Anatomy of the Ship series and now updated, this volume provides the most detailed description and illustrations of the Victory available anywhere. A pictorial section contains numerous clear photographs emphasizing close-up and on-board views of ship equipment and spaces. Three hundred perspective and three-view drawings, with fully descriptive keys, illustrate every detail of the ship, including hull construction, masts and yards, armament, rigging, decoration and fittings. These accurate and totally comprehensive drawings offer ship buffs, historians, and model makers a full view of the ship and her position in the development of the First Rate. , H, Pages 120. 1797: Nelson's Year of Destiny by Colin White,
--Nelson first came to public fame at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent 1797, when the Royal Navy won a great victory of the Spanish. Five month later in the attack on Santa Cruz on 22-25 July he suffered a bloody defeat at the hands of the Spanish and lost an arm. These two events played a key role in shaping Nelson's character and style as a leader. Taken together they mark a significant turning point in his life. Colin White draws together recent research and new discouvers into a comprehensive and enthralling narraitve account that places the two battles in their strategic and political contents. He has uncovered previously overlooked contemporary accounts of both battles and has concluded that the traditional British accounts of both battles need careful reassessment. Colin's previous book, The Nelson Companion, complements his study of Nelson by carefully looking at many Nelson stories., H, Pages 160. 36 b/w illus., 6.8 X9.8. In the summer of 1804, Napoleon amasses a vast army to invade England. At sea, his powerful Combined Fleet prepares to meet Admiral Nelson's British Fleet in the Battle of Trafalgar, an infamous conflict recognized in the annals of naval history as second in destructiveness only to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Captain Nathaniel Drinkwater, newly-appointed commander of the frigate ANTIGONE, is preparing for battle off the French coast as part of Admiral Nelson's blockade. As the two fleets draw toward their fateful confrontation, Drinkwater suddenly finds himself a prisoner of the French, and seems likely to witness the battle from the orlop of an enemy ship. , P, Pages 306. , . 21: The Unfinished Twenty-First Novel in the Aubrey/Maturin Series by Patrick O'Brian,
--The incomplete book that POB tolds us about in 1999 as he made his last US tour. Planned for the Christmas gift season, the 21st book is larger than the individual series volume provides his fans with a POB memorial. Starling Lawrence wrote a brief introduction, Richard Snow the "Conclusion," and book 21 presents the manuscript facsimile on one right side of the open book and the printed version on the other. The publisher writes: "The Unfinished Twenty-First Novel in the Aubrey/Maturin Series. In response to the interest of millions of Patrick O'Brian fans, here is the final, partial installment of the Aubrey/Maturin series. Blue at the Mizzen (novel #20) ended with Jack Aubrey getting the news, in Chile, of his elevation to flag rank: Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron, with orders to sail to the South Africa station. The next novel, unfinished and untitled at the time of the author's death, would have been the chronicle of that mission, and much else besides. The three chapters left on O'Brian's desk at the time of his death are presented here both in printed version-including his corrections to the typescript-and a facsimile of his manuscript, which goes several pages beyond the end of the typescript to include a duel between Stephen Maturin and an impertinent officer who is courting his fiancée. Of course we would rather have had the whole story; instead we have this proof that O'Brian's powers of observation, his humor, and his understanding of his characters were undiminished to the end." , H, Pages 144. 0, 0. 24-Gun Frigate Pandora; The by John McKay and Ron Coleman,
--The Pandora was a 24-gun Sixth Rate built at Deptford in 1779. The 20- and 24-gun classes were the smallest regularly commanded by a Post Captain and they were consequently known as post ships; they were also the smallest frigate-built ships on the Navy List. The Pandora is best known for her voyage to Tahiti which was undertaken to bring back the Bounty mutineers. Fourteen of them were captured at Tahiti but four of them were drowned when Pandora ran aground on 29 August 1791 on the Great Barrier Reef on her return journey. The surviving ten were eventually brought back to Portsmouth and court-martialled. Three of them were hung. The site of the wreck was discovered and has been extensively excavated by a team led by Ron Coleman. The 'Anatomy of the Ship' series aims to provide the finest documentation of individual ships and ship types ever published. What makes the series unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory views, with fully descriptive keys. These are supported by technical details and a record of the ship's service history. John McKay is an architectural draughtsman who lives in Vancouver on the Pacific coast of Canada. He is also a ship enthusiast and modelmaker who has turned his professional skill to good use in the service of his hobby. Ron Coleman is Curator of Maritime History and Archaeology at the Queensland Museum in Brisbane, Australia. He oversaw several seasons' excavation on the wreck site of the Pandora., H, Pages 120. 40 Illust., 305 drwgs., 10X9. List Price $34.95, Your price $26.20, Book Number B01216. Go to top of catalog.
44-Gun Frigate USS Constitution; The by Karl-Heinz Marquardt,
--The Constitution was one of the first frigates built by the fledgling U.S. Navy, ordered in 1794 as a counter to the Barbary corsairs in the Mediterranean. Heavily built but fast, she was rated as a 44-gun ship but mounted thirty 24-pounder and twenty-two 12 pounder cannons. Her most famous encounter came in 1812 when she successfully fought against HMS Guerriere, earning the nick name "Old Ironsides" when the British round shot could not penetrate her walls. Built in Boston where she has been berthed for the past seventy-one years, she is considered to be the oldest commissioned warship in the world. The internationally acclaimed draftsman and author Karl-Heinz Marquardt worked closely with the team at the Constitution to ensure that the book is accurate and up to date. Dozens of photographs and some 100 perspective and 3-view drawings are included along with fully descriptive keys and a large scale foldout plan on the reverse side of the jacket., H, Pages 120. , 10.5X9.5. 50-gun Ship; The by Rif Winfield,
--By the end of the sailing era the 50-Gun ship was regarded too small to stand in the line of battle but too slow to serve as a frigate and dismissed by many as a naval dinasaur. Winfield reveals the crucial role played by the 50-gun ship in the British development of both the battleship and the frigate and explains the enduring role that ensured the survival of the type into the nineteenth century. An in-depth history; numerous data tables, original draughts, models, paintings, and drawings; John McKay's eye-pleasing perspective and cutaway drawings; and a separate set of large scale plans. The infamous Leopard of 1790 recorded in the novels of Patrick O'Brian gets significant attention., H, Pages 128. 4 Cutaway Drawings, 9.5 X11.5. Admirals in the Age of Nelson by Lee Beinkowski,
--The period of the French Wars (1793-1815), known as the golden age of fighting sail in Great Britain because of the extraordinary victories won by the Royal Navy, produced an impressive roster of brilliant flag officers. To date, however, these naval leaders have been overshadowed by the legendary status of their contemporary Admiral Lord Nelson. This book corrects the oversight by putting eleven other admirals in the limelight. In this collection of short biographical essays Lee Bienkowski assesses each officer's career, describing the factors that influenced the subject's character and contributed to his success. While each biography calls attention to the distinctive traits of the admiral profiled, together they provide an interesting perspective of the Royal Navy, its leadership, and the wars between Britain and the rest of the world. Many of the men included have not been the subjects of study since the nineteenth century. The author makes liberal use of primary source material. Among those profiled are the noble-born Lord Howe whose fame came at the Glorious First of June, Lord Duncan who fought at the Battle of Camperdown, Sir John Duckworth at the Battle of San Domingo, and Lord de Saumarez at the Battle of Algeceras. These relatively unknown but highly skilled leaders made an impact on history, and their fact-filled portraits not only hold the reader's attention, but also contribute significantly to the literature of the period., H, Pages 288. , . Adventures at Sea in the Great Age of Sail by Capt. Elliot Snow,

She excited a considerable sensation for she was the largest merchant vessel built at that time in the United States ... ." In this anthology of five rare firsthand accounts of adventures on the high seas, the writers reveal the spririt of pre-revolutionary war American era when American sailing ships explored the seven seas and transformed a young nation into a maritime power. American Heavy Frigates 1794-1826 by Mark Lardas,
--By 1805 the 44-gun frigate was probably viewed as a failed experiment. Ten years later every navy was building 44-gun frigates and today it is viewed as the symbol of the Napoleonic-era cruiser. This remarkable transformation resulted from the performance of three ships - the Constitution, United States, and President--44 gun frigates built for the United States Navy between 1794 and 1799. Their victories in the naval War of 1812, as well as their success against the Barbary Pirates, caught the imagination of the world. This book examines the construction of the American heavy frigates and outlines the factors that spurred all navies into re-examing this class. , P, Pages 48. , 7.3X9.8. Blue At The Mizzen by Patrick O'Brian,
--The excitement of the Aubrey/Maturin series soars to new heights in this volume, as Jack, again the daring frigate commander of old, stakes all on a desperate solo night raid against the might of the Spanish viceroy in Peru. Napoleon has been defeated at Waterloo, and the ensuing peace takes on an ugly complexion for Captain Jack Aubrey: Drunken, violent celebrations of the English sailors in Gibraltar; the desertion of nearly half his crew; and the sudden dimming of his own career prospects in a peacetime navy. To cap it all off, the Surprise is nearly sunk in a shattering night collision on the first leg of her journey to South America, where Jack and Stephen are to help Chile assert her independence from Spain. The delay occasioned by repairs reaps a harvest of strange consequences. The widowed Stephen Maturin experiences a startling emotional rebirth, and an amorous adventure in a mangrove swamp with the beautiful and accomplished naturalist Christine Wood leads to a proposal of marriage. Jack, meanwhile, is persuaded to accept as a midshipman the bastard of the Duke of Clarence (later King William IV). Young Horatio Hanson--officially unacknowledged, but clearly his father's favorite--is one of O'Brian's most engaging characters, and the distinction he earns in the coming campaign will have important repercussions on Jack's fortunes. The South American expedition is a desperate affair, starting with near disaster in the ice-choked seas far south of the Horn, and further marred by bitter divisions in the Chilean naval command. In the end it is Jack's bold initiative to strike at the vastly superior Spanish fleet that precipitates the spectacular naval action that will determine both Chile's fate and his own., P,  , 5.5 X 8.3. Boats of Men-of-War by W. E. May,
--In the age of sail, the boats carried by the men-of-war were an essential part of the ship's outfitting. They were necessary to move stores, act as the "engine" in confined waters, serve as amphibious raiders, and even to cruise independently as tenders to the mother ship. Over the centuries there have been many sizes, hull forms, and rigs employed, so the exact details proved a problem for model makers, marine artists, and builders of replicas. In 1974 the original edition of this book was published by the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, England. Still the only complete study of this neglected topic, the book has now been revised and expanded to include more illustrations. It covers the sizes and types of boats formally allocated, the methods of hoisting and stowing them aboard ship, and the design and construction of the boats themselves, as well as their fittings, rigs, and armament, including guns, howitzers, and Congreve rockets. Although primarily devoted to the age of sail, the book also covers the steamboats of the late nineteenth century. Ship modelers, historians of the sailing navy, and small-craft enthusiasts will welcome this new edition., H, Pages 128. , 7.5 X10. List Price $36.95, Your price $27.70, Book Number B00781. CSS Alabama: Anatomy of a Confederate Raider by Andrew Bowcock,
--Provides a complete anatomy in words, pictures, and drawings of the famous Confederate commerce raider of the Civil War capturing sixty-five Federal mechant ships and sinking USS Hatteras in a two year cruise. Eventually sunk by the USS Kearsarge off Cherbourg on 19 June 1864. Having been built in great secrecy, little was know of the Alabama until this superb complilation of drawings, photos, and tables about her construction, masting, rigging, armament, engines, and internal arrangements. Detailed plans point out the arrangement of everything from belaying pin layouts, sail construction, and frame structures. Based on the latest research, including archaeological work on the recently rediscovered wreck, this book provides a complete anatomy in words, pictures, and drawings of one of the most famous ships of all time, the Confederate commerce raider Alabama of 1862. The sloop-of-war was known worldwide for her phenomenally destructive campaign against Union shipping that extended from coastal Texas to Cape Town, South Africa. Winning prizes estimated at $6 million, the ship was eventually tracked down and sunk off the coast of Cherbourg by the USS Kearsarge. Despite enduring interest in the ship, many details of her structure and fitting are still a matter of debate. The ship's clandestine construction and delayed arming produced often contradictory evidence. For this book, the author sifted through every known contemporary photograph, painting, model, and plan to produce the most detailed set of drawings of the Alabama ever published. With more than 250 illustrations, plans, and line drawings, the work will delight naval historians, Civil War enthusiasts, and model-makers alike. , H, Pages 160. 30, 9.8x11.8. Celestial Navigation in a Nutshell by Hewitt Schlereth,
--Practical considerations aside, there is something soul-satisfying about looking to the sky to plot one's course. And despite the proliferation of electronic navigational devices, celestrial navigation remains an essential tool for those who do not wish to be caught short when modern technology fails. In this easy-to-use guide, the author, explains clearly and concisely how to navigate any stretch of sea using only a hand-held sextant, a watch, a plotting sheet, and a copy of the Nautical Almanac. The basic process is simple. The reader is taken carefully through several examples and situational illustrations, making this a most effective self-teaching guide., P, Pages 136. Cochrane: Britannia's Sea Wolf by Donald Thomas,
--The fictional heroics of C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey are pale imitations of the deeds of Admiral Lord Thomas Cochrane, one of the most daring and successful real-life heroes the naval world has ever seen. In this fascinating account of his life, Donald Thomas fills in the details of Cochrane's winning exploits against the French Navy, actions that earned him the title "Sea Wolf" from Napoleon. Despite his extraordinary accomplishments and the controversies that plagued his long life, today the admiral is not well known outside the naval community. Thomas's splendid narrative is certain to give the valiant and romantic sea warrior the recognition he deserves. His meticulous scholarship and index, notes, and bibliography make the biography a useful reference. The battle descriptions are particularly noteworthy, especially that of the Basque Roads in 1809 when Cochrane nearly achieved another Nile. Cochrane's battles on land as a politician are described with equal attention to colorful detail. While mounting a vigorous campaign against corruption in the Admiralty, he gained many enemies, who, in turn, framed him in a sensational stock exchange fraud case. Imprisoned briefly, he fought back with his usual intensity, restored his reputation, and returned to sea, bound in 1818 for the wars of independence in South America. Once again with nearly total disregard of danger, he helped liberate Brazil and Chile from colonial rule. Upon his death in 1860, a few weeks before his eighty-fifth birthday, he received a hero's burial in Westminster Abbey., P, Pages 400. illus, note, bibl, index., 6x9. Collected Tales Of Conrad by Joseph Conrad,
--Many call Conrad the greatest of writers on nautical themes. Not all of the stories in these books relate to the sea, nor do many of the stories relate to commonplace life that most would recognize but Conrad's life was the sea. Some stories, "The Duel," (On which the movie The Duelists was based) seem to find a heart-wrenching happy ending from improbable events while others, "The Idiots," end unhappily with an event flowing surprisingly but inevitably from the tale. His sea stories range from sail to early steam but all brilliantly evoke the sea and a seaman's respect for it. Don't expect to find the "technicolor" world of POB; Conrad's palette has black, grays, and dark browns. Much of his work may not be readily accessible to average readers nor will many of his nautical allusion readily obvious. "Amy Foster" will leave you groping for heroes and villians-or fools. "Youth" reflects the views of old men about their differences from the man they once were. My dad and his cronies often started a story with, "Was you in Cuba during the revolution." This story might have started, "Was you ever having fun in a typhoon?", P, Pages 631. , . List Price $18.00, Your price $15.30, Book Number B00283. Go to top of catalog.

Command of the Ocean; The by N. A. M. Rodger,
--A landmark work on the golden age of sail that illuminates the world of Jack Aubrey and Horatio Hornblower. The Command of the Ocean describes with unprecedented authority and scholarship the rise of Britain to naval greatness, and the central place of the Navy and naval activity in the life of the nation and government. Based on the author's own research in a dozen languages over more than a decade, it describes not just battles, voyages, and cruises but also how the Navy was manned, supplied, fed, and, above all, how it was financed and directed. N. A. M. Rodger provides convincing reassessments of such famous figures as Pepys, Hawke, Howe, and St. Vincent. The very particular and distinct qualities of Nelson and Collingwood are illuminatingly contrasted, and the world of officers and men who make up the originals of Jack Aubrey and Horatio Hornblower is brilliantly brought to life. Rodger's comparative view of other navies-French, Dutch, Spanish, and American-allows him to make a fresh assessment of the qualities of the British. 24 pages of illustrations. N. A. M. Rodger is professor of naval history at Exeter University and a fellow of the British Academy. He is the author of The Wooden World and the highly acclaimed first volume of his naval history of Britain, The Safeguard of the Sea., H, Pages 908. , 9.5X6.5.
