History of the Navy of the USA; The by James Fenimore
Cooper, James Fenimore Cooper is well known for many of his classic
historical novels, including The Last of the Mohicans and The Deerslayer,
but few people are aware that he was a serious historian as well.
America's first major author, he was also the first to pen a history of
the U. S. Navy that stood the test of time and continues to this day to
offer significant insight into the nation's early maritime history. Not
known for his conciseness, Cooper first published his history in
multiple volumes in 1838, but later pared it down to this one-volume
version. The narrative genius that he brought to his novels is evident
despite the fact that this is serious history. Tales of buccaneers,
colonial sea fights, the American Revolution, the Quasi-War with France,
and the War of 1812 are all vividly recounted, and the original
engravings have been retained to enhance the presentation of this new
edition. No mere literary curiosity, the work deserves the attention of
serious students of the period, both for its factual exposition and for
the perspective Cooper brings to occurrences chronologically close to
him. Like many historians, his interpretation of the facts was not
accepted by all, and in his preface Cooper comments about attempts made
to injure the book and his credibility. A classic in the finest sense of
the word, this book has been a cornerstone in the ever-building corpus
of American naval history. James Fenimore Cooper is remembered as one of
America's literary giants of the nineteenth century. --Naval Institute
Press, 2001, , 5.5 X 8.3. H, List Price $34.95, Your

Sailor of King George: The Journals of Capt. Frederick Hoffman, RN
1793-1814; A by A. B. Bevan and H. B. Wolryche-Whitmore, Written in
1838 and first published in 1901, this vivid account of high-seas
adventure during Britain's wars with Revolutionary and Napoleonic France
offers a clear, unexaggerated, and highly entertaining picture of naval
life and seafaring society durning this tumultuous period that is
unavailable in more conventional history. Hoffman's rousing, yet
straightforward description of his meteoric rise from midshipman to
captain and his participation in at least eighteen major sea battles,
including Trafalgar, has been called "as thrilling as anything C. S.
Forester or Alexander Kent could dream up." A shrewd observer with an
engaging sense of humor, Hoffman provides a unique and sometimes
iconoclastic human portrait of this watershed period between the
dynastic and colonial wars of the eighteenth century and the national
and ideological wars of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For
example, his less brutal and dehumanizing character ization of life
aboard a man-of-war was considered heresy until recent research
discoveries bore out Hoffman's views.--Naval Institute Press, 1998, 4

Sailor Of Fortune: The Life And Adventures Of Commodore Barney, Usn
by Hulbert Footner, Commodore Joshua Barney's biography, another
matching volume of the Classics of Naval Literature series, has been
cited as the finest biography of one of America's first and most
interesting naval heroes, but it provides one of the best portrayals of
political and social life in the fledgling republic in the period from
the Revolutionary War through the War of 1812. Barney, at sea at the age
of ten and master of a transatlantic commercial vessel at fifteen,
achieved exploits comparable to John Paul Jones. Barney became legendary
in the Chesapeake Bay region because of many eyewitnesses who passed it
down to their descendants of his great defense of Baltimore and the
Battle of St. Leonard's Creek in 1814.--Naval Institute Press, ,

Stoddert's War: Naval Operations During the Quasi-War with France,
1798-1801 by Michael A. Palmer, Part of Classics of Naval
Literature. An award-winning study of the Franco-American undeclared
naval war at the turn of the nineteenth century, this history of the
nearly forgotten struggle is filled with the dramatic actions of such
frigates as the Constellation and her capture of l'Insurgente, as well
as the sundry opreations that protected American commerce from the
depredations of the French corsairs in the Caribbean. The book takes a
critical look at the command and operations of the first secretary of
the Navy, Benjamin Stoddert, and how under his direction the Navy proved
itself ship for ship as--if no more--effective against French privateers
than the Royal Navy.--Naval Institute Press, , M. A. Palmer, 5.5 X8.3.

Voice from the Main Deck; A by Samuel Leech, First published in
1834, Samuel Leech's autobiographical account of his adventures won
British and US Frigates offers not only entertaining ation but an astute
observation of the harsh rigors and traditions of naval life during the
early nineteenth century. The author's graphic description of constant
lashings helped fuel the reform movement that eventually led to the
abolition of flogging and the grog ration. Just twelve years old when he
left home, the young Leech had romantic notions about seafaring that
were soon dashed by the crushing reality of life onboard HMS Macdonia.--Naval
Institute Press, , Michael J. Crawford, 3 drawings, 5.5 X 8.5. H, List
